President Lee Jae-myung nominated Kang Shin-chul, former Deputy Commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command (CFC), as his nominee for Minister of National Defense on Aug. 30th, putting the retired general in the spotlight.
Kang was born in Seoul in 1968. A graduate of the 46th class of the Korea Military Academy, he was commissioned in 1990. After serving in field units, he held key positions at the ROK-U.S. CFC and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), establishing himself as an expert in military strategy and defense policy.
His nomination has drawn particular attention because the Lee Jae-myung administration, which has emphasized holding those responsible for the December 3 martial law crisis accountable, has chosen a graduate of the Korea Military Academy as defense minister nominee.
With follow-up measures related to the martial law crisis nearing completion, the move is seen as an effort to stabilize the military and swiftly address major defense issues, including the integration of the military academies and the transition of wartime operational control (OPCON).
Following Kang's nomination, anecdotes shared by enlisted soldiers who previously served under him have also gained attention.
Known for his inclusive and rational leadership style, attention is now focused on whether Kang will pass his confirmation hearing and lead efforts to reform the Ministry of National Defense.
